Egg Cartons as Seed Starters: By Plant addict at 2012-04-25 16:08:04

Styrofoam egg cartons make good seed starter. You can grow any kinds of seeds but tiny seeds like Petunia, impatience, coleus etc works well.
The plants which can't be transplanted doesn't do good. Egg carton is very shallow so plants like beans, cucumber etc would not do well.
Ok, so get started.
What you will need: 1. Styrofoam egg carton 2. Potting mix 3. Paint Pen or Sharpie 4. Spray bottle
Method: 1. Take styrofoam egg carton. 2. Wet seed starting mis or potting mix throughly with water. 3. Fill it in Egg carton and level it. 4. Sow your seeds on top of this soil. 5. Lable the name with Sharpie. Keep separate journal if needed since after sometimes the lable might not be readable. 6. Close the lid 7. Keep this Egg Carton near heating vent or in a warm place where they can get 70f and above temperature. 8. Check every day morning. If soil looks dry spray little bit of water through spray bottle. 9. You might see sprouts in 3-7 days according to the variety of seed. 10. As soon as seed sprouts it needs light. 11. Put them on sunny window sill or under shop light. Petunia, impatience, coleus etc do well on window sill. 12. If putting under light, light should be kept 3-4 inch above the seedling so that it may not become leggy. 13. When seedlings are 2-3 inch big they should be replanted in 4" or bigger pots.
